Follow-up from direct emails:
Turned out to not be specific to the alarm GUI.
Pop-up dialogs in general would cause issues with keyboard/mouse input.
Changing between GTK2/3 made no difference.
In the end, the vncserver was the problem.
Using thinlinc as the remote desktop server and client, even attaching to the thinlinc server with a plain vnc client avoided these issues.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Alarm Problem
I'm having a problem with alarm tree. When I right click and choose "Add Component", the app performs a grab of the keyboard and mouse with the following result:
No keyboard input is accepted from the alarm tree popup window (where I may select the type and content)
No Keyboard or mouse input is seen by other Phoebus applications or external applications
The only input accepted is using the mouse to select the type (node or pv/s) or clicking the cancel or OK button in the popup window but at this point no new content has been entered so nothing may be added
to the tree.
Has anyone seen anything like this?
I am accessing the system though vnc and see no other issues except for one that may be related. If I make a change in display builder
and exit without having already saved the change, I get a popup which allows me to save or discard changes but something has performed a keyboard and mouse grab and I have to kill the vnc session from a terminal
to recover.
