The MAXnet controller is a bit of an outlier. According to the manual I have for it (which was downloaded in 2010) it will *only* home to a dedicated home switch.
I've worked around this problem for a MAXv axis with an encoder by setting HI0 (use only the home input to determine the home position) and then wiring the index line of the encoder into the home input of the MAXv. For axes without encoders, the other solutions involving the motor record's SET functionality are likely the only options.

That’s fairly common I think. Most controllers won’t support homing to a limit switch, probably because it confuses the function of the switch and the home position would change depending on how fast you move onto the switch.
