I'm pretty sure JLab (i.e. CEBAF) still uses HP-UX pretty heavily, but I
don't know what resources they have to assist in continuing development.

Hasn't this always been the case? HP provides java for HP-UX and OpenVMS.
Apple provides java for Mac OS X. IBM provides java for AIX machines.
I imagine that since Sun has open-sourced Java, they want to make it clear
that they won't support every architecture to which someone ports the code.
