You may be missing an important point in the example code I linked.
This code is not accessing an n-dim array in some abstract mathematical sense.
It is translating, without copying, into a numpy ndarray.
This is a necessary step as there is no shortage of array container types.

I hope not, because I think this would be wholly unnecessary.
