Let's hear it for the IT people!
A solution is found via a "click-through" parameter which may or may not
already be present in a .plist file.
For Leopard (with X11 at version 2.1.5) look for the parameter
"wm_click_through" in the file ~/Library/Preferences/org.x.X11.plist.
Change the value from False to True.
If that parameter is not present within the plist (it wasn't for me),
execute the following command from an xterm:
"defaults write org.x.X11 wm_click_through -bool true"
Either way, start from a new X11 session (kill the server and restart).
MEDM now functions as expected.
