Hi Nicholas,

If the server in the US is really not blocked by a firewall then you should be able to do the following on your client machine in Germany:

- Set the environment variable EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST to include the IP address of the server in the US

- You may also need to change some timing parameters.  Read the section called Configuration  in this document:

http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/base/R3-14/8-docs/CAref.html

- Run the basic EPICS utilities from EPICS base:

  cainfo ‘pvname’

  getget ‘pvname’

- Launch your MCA client

As Lewis said this would be a dangerous configuration to have the server not behind a firewall, since anyone could access it.

Mark

Subject: MCA and WAN connection

Dear EPICS support,

I'm trying to access a channel with a PV from a server (located in the USA and me sitting in Germany) with MCA for Matlab.

For this I'm trying     CH1=mcaopen('pvname')    but without success.

The question for me is, if the reason for this is the firewall of the server (but should be cutoff) or if I have to add the specific IP of the server to any file? (library)

Probably problems in the different subnets?

What/where is the parameter which has to be changed?

Thank you for responding my question!

Nicolas
