How did I miss that little nugget of EPICS know how?


Server-side filters were only added in 3.15.1, and might not be covered in any training slides yet. There are several filters now available (documented in your base/html/filters.html), and you can even add your own (they can even be IOC-specific), but I'm not aware that anyone else has actually done that yet.
