At Los Alamos, we have used averaging with compression records for a long time
and I was surprised by your note, then I realized that we were using only the
compress_scalar averaging, which is OK.  We also made a version of the
compression record that allows the value of N to be changed. I think
this is a needed improvement.

I hope your corrections get put into the next releases of EPICS.
