the line length was definitely below 200 characters at all times.
I don't know whether I exceeded 2 lines (wrapped) at some point in
time.

500 characters would have been more than enough :-)

Umm, no. I have one or the other that has an actual email address
or two in it, ones that I know won't change too soon (e.g. the ones
that go to me only). Having mutiple email addresses would require
restarting the alarm handler(s) each time you want to add a person
or take a person off.
works like this:
$SEVRCOMMAND UP_MAJOR echo "Michelle CCC 2nd stage exceeds 20K" |
/usr/ucb/mail -s "Michelle CCC 2nd stage temp. exceeds 20K"
maren-michelle
(maren-michelle is a forwarding list - the above is of course one line)
If the above line would be about 40 characters longer it would
get cut off.
