Getting the ornlSerial device support init routine to return 2
does indeed solve the problem.
Questions:
1. Is this 2 symbolically defined in a header file somewhere?
The record support code still uses Magic Numbers unfortunately.
2. Where is the best place to find a "How to write device support" manual?
There is some material in the Device Support lectures from the 2003 USPAS
course: http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/docs/USPAS2003/10_Device_Support.pdf
but this doesn't go into the "return 2" issue at all, which is a
record-specific but commonly used convention. Once you've got the basics
covered by that lecture and you're looking for specifics like that, the
information should be found in the Record Reference Manual entry for the
record type, or in the record source code. Other device support for the
same record type can also be useful.
