Hello Zhao Zhuo,
the Gateway is a proxy server that is able to provide Channel Access
connections between different networks - similar to an HTML proxy that
is getting and caching web pages if your browser is behind a firewall.
Usually labs are using the Gateway to allow certain specific connections
to networks that are generally separated for security reasons. Examples
are the connections between a machine controls network and seperate
beamline networks, or providing a read-only view to the machine for
people sitting in their offices.
So - if you have separate networks in your system, and you want certain
people to be able to connect to certain Channels on the other network
without giving them full access to everything, the Gateway is doing that
job. For running your machine control system as long as everything is
within one network - you don't need the Gateway.
The Gateway Users Guide (available on the Gateway page at APS) provides
more details.
For your situation you are right compiling the Gateway against a 3.14
base while leaving all your other developments on 3.13 right now. This
will get you a working Gateway without interrupting the others.
But when the Gateway page says "needs R3.14.5 base" it actually means
that the 2.0 Gateway needs 3.14.5 OR LATER. I would suggest switching to
the latest version of Base. Probably we should update the web page in
that detail.
Hope this helps ... good luck!

> Thank you for your reply! I build base3.14.5 because I want to build gateway2.0.0. You know, at first I want to build gateway1.3.3 based base3.13.8. But you recommend me build the latest gateway2.0.0 based base3.14.5. However our united version is base3.13.8, our developer have done a lot of thing, we didn't want to update base version so that it will make some unknown trouble for them. I read from webpage that we used epics3.13 for our application but still can use gateway 2.x built with epics 3.14 as a gateway.
