OK, I tried your suggestion to comment out the last line in base/configure/os/CONFIG_SITE.Common.linux-x86 and now...success! (using gcc 3.3.4). I did not know about the readline package requirement, where do I find this? What I did was download epics base and also latest CVS from the aps.anl.gov/epics site, tar xzvf the file, read the build instructions in documentation/README.1st. I have gcc and g++ in my path, I set the EPICS_HOST_ARCH environment variable, I ran command "make clean uninstall" followed by "make". It is interesting that the build succeeded without the readline package using earlier gcc. Thanks, Chip Piller Robert Soliday wrote: I do not believe it has anything to do with your compiler. It appears that you do not have the readline package installed. You can still get EPICS Base to compile without it if you edit base/configure/os/CONFIG_SITE.Common.linux-x86 and comment out the last line where it sets COMMANDLINE_LIBRARY = READLINE
