I meant individual save-on-change or backup-on-change of course.

One could argue that a driver implementation is the best solution
(relative simple to implement + full control). The process function
saves the val in a file with the name of the record. If the file exist,
the init function restores the value (val in db file otherwise).
Sometimes the restored value needs to be fetched from the hardware
itself (or rather an input record). As far as I know, autosave doesn't
do hardware restore. Is there any "high" level utility (outside of
driver/db) that implements that feature?
Note that the streamDevice does that beautifully, but enough rambling
about that driver!
The obvious issue with low level/driver implementation is that it makes
their writing more cluttered and complicated. It also goes against the
trends of having generic high level driver like asyn, devGpib, and ...
stream. But as I said... enough about stream. ;-)
