Since you use RHEL4,  if it is for RTEMS4.9, you should

RHEL5 for RTEMS4.9 development will be OK.

Thanks to Eric Norum's help, the immediate problem appears to be the gcc
in RHEL 4, which is v3.4.5. Setting CC to 'gcc4' in the
getAndBuildTools.sh script and exporting it seems to have gotten me past
the assembler problem. But I may run into the gm4 problem later and be
forced to upgrade my Linux installation. <sigh>
