Hi Josh,
We have used Absocoder multi turn absolute position encoders made by
NSD in Japan in our cyclotron with good success. There are single and
multi-turn rotary versions and linear types as well. They have a 16 bit
parallel output word from the controller, and we have cable lengths to
the encoder head of about 200 feet.
They are distributed in North America by www.enpromech.com

I've investigated a few leads which seem promising, but would like to
hear fresh ideas from the experts (you guys).
