We usually build shared code on the oldest distribution that we need to support, and find that it then just works on all our machines running newer versions. This was the approach I had used with Solaris with good results. But my experience with compatibility under Linux has not been as good as yours. For SNS, we have managed to stick with a single RHEL release everywhere. When it comes time to start phasing in an upgrade, I plan to introduce a (for example) linux-x86-rhel6 architecture. The idea is to limit growth of distributions to support by standardizing on every other RHEL major release as it comes out.
