Hi Dirk,
At the CLS they're using the MOXA UC-7408 (http://www.moxa.com/product/UC-7408.htm) all over the place for integrating RS-232 devices. It's not powerful, but it's got 8 serial ports and comes running Linux. NFS mounted filesystems work fine with it.
I've used them with EPICS + asyn + StreamDevice on four different projects. The cross-compile is pretty smooth, using the mxscaleb compiler toolchain distributed by MOXA (http://www.moxa.com/drivers/UC/toolchain_mxscaleb/mxscaleb-3.3.2-9.i386.zip -- Linux 2.4 only?).
Here's my cross-compile configuration file: base/configure/os/CONFIG.Common.linux-armb (*)
Good luck!

(*) was written by Glen Wright at the CLS, for EPICS 14.9. I modified it to fix a bug in the omission of the -D_ARM_NWFP_ flag in ARCH_DEP_CPPFLAGS, which was corrupting channel access floating point data, due to the reversed word order it uses to store doubles.
