This does look a bit tricky. On our systems (RHEL7), the certificate is trusted by firefox, but not by curl. Running `curl -v` I see that the certificate is issued by "InCommon RSA Server CA" as you say, and this not in our CAfile (loaded from /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt).
Unfortunately we can't check this directly on the travis servers, but I think we're running our tests on Xenial (Ubuntu 16.04).
I can't tell whether there's a problem with the trust relationship with InCommon or whether Ubuntu and RHEL7 are simply behind the times; google hasn't told me anything relevant yet...
