The latter. Link fields no longer have this limit (or a much larger
one). But the DBR_STRING request type in CA has a fixed maximum number
of bytes. However, I believe you can nowadays (>= 3.15) use a trailing
'$' in the PV name to make CA use DBR_CHAR with the correct number of
elements.
