export EPICS_CA_NAME_SERVERS=...
export EPICS_CA_AUTO_ADDR_LIST=NO

The name servers list should contain the IP:port (tcp port) of _all_ CA servers
which the client needs to reach.  Typically, this is a CA gateway, so the list
isn't too large.  Directly searching to more than a few IOCs this way will quickly
become unwieldy.
