How do you know that it's the monitor update that is lost, and not writing the new values from pyepics that gets out of sync?

For such a test, I think you will get better results by making your IOC generate the updates itself.

record(calc, "counter") {
field(SCAN, ".1 second")
field(CALC, "VAL+1")
}

Any such record will generate 10 updates per second, without having to write anything to the IOC.

Generate enough of them and see how far you get.
