Overview:

The United States is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. A self-heated burning plasma is a crucial step in fusion energy development. US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). ITER's other partners are the People's Republic of China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation. US ITER is seeking an experienced I&C Plant System Engineer that will be responsible leading the development of I&C software for all US ITER plant systems. US ITER scope includes Electron Cyclotron and Ion Cyclotron Transmission Line systems, Vacuum subsystems, Pellet Injection, Tritium Exhaust Processing and Diagnostic subsystems. 

 

In this challenging role you will be an integral member of an international team developing plant systems towards a goal of achieving a major milestone towards commercially available Fusion energy. Execution of this objective requires developing a flexible software architecture that can adapt to the evolution of the ITER physical plant systems from First Plasma in 2025 to full Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) nuclear operation in 2035.  

 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As Lead Software Engineer for US ITER Instrumentation & Control, you will be responsible for the execution of all US ITER I&C software scope
  • As Technical Project Officer (TPO) for US ITER I&C software you will be responsible for working with Plant System development teams and procurement to develop and manage Task Orders under existing Basic Ordering Arrangement (BOA) with our software development partners
  • Work closely with US ITER and IO Plant System leads to develop system software requirements in compliance with ITER Control, Data Access and Communication (CODAC) operational framework
  • Initiate and drive collaborative software development as project lead and as a contributor
  • Serve as US ITER I&C software point-of-contact to ITER International Organization 
  • Ability to lead multiple software projects simultaneously
  • Oversee Plant Factory Acceptance Testing
  • Ensure software quality assurance (SQA) compliance 
  • Participate in technical design reviews
  • Foreign and domestic travel to IO, design partners and subcontractors 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in STEM discipline
  • Minimum of eight (6) years of software development for controls systems for large science user facility  
  • Software development experience with Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS)
  • Proven success as contributor in the development and commissioning of Plant Controls Systems for large science user facility
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in STEM discipline
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of software development for controls systems for large science user facility  
  • Software development experience with Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS)
  • Proven success as contributor and subsystem leader in development and commissioning of Plant Controls Systems for large science user facility
  • Familiar with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
