> Phoebus will run for a while and then hang, especially if I change the
value of an element so that it trips an alarm.  It seems that Phoebus
will hang if there are problems with the alarms package.  I think, that
in this case, the program stops working because the alarm package wants
to log this change.  (But, I could be wrong.) So I am trying to setup
the alarm-logger. 

You certainly don’t need the alarm logger. If you have problems running without the alarm logger, you’ll have the same problems plus new ones after you add the alarm logger.

First figure out what exactly hangs.

Does the alarm server still run, can you “ls” alarms on its console?
Does the alarm server still send status updates, as you can see via `monitor_topics.sh`?
Does something in the GUI hang? Start the GUI with only a display, only the alarm tree, only the alarm table, only the alarm annunciator. Which one is hanging?
