In my work representing Volvo Group I have been supporting Chalmers University of Technology with combustion engine test cell improvements to improve the quality of research projects where we collaborate in the public domain.
We encountered EPICS through Ralph Lange & Timo Korhonen who have been outstanding in their support and help for me and my colleagues from Chalmers University.
As our use case and needs are relatively specific, we wanted to reach out to this community to see if there is anyone that has used EPICS for a similar use case as ours. We understand that EPICS is used from a quite a broad perspective so finding use case like
ours would help a lot in gaining momentum in our needs.
Use case description:
We operate advanced single- and multi-cylinder internal combustion engine test rigs. The automation today is AVL PUMA for supervisory control of air handling, fuel delivery, and dynamometer operation, high-speed combustion acquisition via DEWESoft, and PLC-based
safety and actuator control systems. The automation system regulates intake pressure and temperature, exhaust backpressure, injection timing, and crank-angle-resolved pressure logging (through DEWESoft logger). Instrumentation includes in-cylinder pressure
sensors, thermocouples, mass flow controllers, and emissions analyzers requiring synchronized timestamping and centralized data management.
We are assessing whether EPICS could replace AVL PUMA as the supervisory automation layer and wonder if anyone has a use-case similar in nature to ours.
