This was exactly the "obvious" thing I was expecting... I definitely need to
keep more Gentoo systems around to keep me from getting rusty with these
things. :)

This hack did not apply cleanly here, but the locally installed pcre3 got
found and processed without it just fine as far as I can see. Everything
compiles and links cleanly now, actual testing is still a bit in the future
but will hopefully follow soon. Thanks again...
