Agreed that's not a good place.

I would prefer that we only put images in the repo if we also include
the protocol document itself (and if we did they should go somewhere
under the documentation/ directory). Is it not possible to add images to
the Wiki page directly? GitHub lets you drag & drop images into issue
comments, so it would be worth trying that with the Wiki editor too.
