it looks like a local vs. remote X setup issue. xlsfonts queries the X
server. From the console of machineA (something like display :0) xlsfont
will list fonts on machineA's X server.
Now from the console of machineB, although you remote start something on
machineA, your X client will be served by machineB X server who will
answer font requests
In recap, you might try a shorter list of fonts that are common to both
machines.

I think your fonts are served by your X server.
although you might ssh -Y/X, your display still is a client of your
local server.

Errata: (once more!) not from a RH8.0 machine but from a Fedora 8
machine. Edm through ssh actually works from a RH8 machine.

Update:
If I ssh from a machine that has the same OS (fedora core 4), the error
disappear!!! When I ssh from a RH8.0 machine, edm report the Font init
failed - abort error.
Huh?!?!?
