Group: Instrument Development Laboratory Job Description Develop novel, custom interface software to acquire data from instruments and automate instrument operation locally and remotely. Also develop software for data storage and display. Will face a diversity of instruments, off-the-shelf and custom fabricated, supporting a wide array of scientific study in both laboratory and field conditions. Team with other technologists and scientists similarly tasked with developing enabling solutions. These teams support the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a national scientific user facility funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Biological and Environmental Research. EMSL seeks to provide scientific users with the resources necessary to solve national challenges related to energy and the environment. Applies and interprets theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies to software interface development. May lead projects or tasks consisting of three or more junior staff and technicians and/or assist in strategic planning.

Minimum Requirements
Level II
- BS in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field and 3-5 years experience.
- No clearance or U.S. citizenship required.
Level III
- BS in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field and 5 years experience. Advanced degree desired.
- No clearance or U.S. citizenship required.
Qualifications
Level II
- Demonstrate competence in API development, client/server model, object-oriented design, as well as experience with modular software programming and hardware communications.
- Demonstrate broad and deep technical knowledge and skills in software engineering.
Level III
- Expert in software engineering specifically applied to interfacing instruments and systems.
- Expert in APIs, client/server model, performance testing, object-oriented design, modular software programming and hardware communications.
