I don't see any obvious backwards-compatible way to allow that.
I just compared the (3.14.12) aai and waveform records, and I don't really see
much difference between them, other than allowing device support to set BPTR
and the BUSY field (which I don't think anyone uses any more); couldn't you
just convert your waveform device supports to aai/aao instead?
