Hi Mrinal,

An off-the-shelf Ethernet motor controller with fast delivery time is the Newport XPS-D.  Unlike the MAXnet/Step Pak it can drive both stepper and DC motors, and has advanced coordinated motion features.

We are using 16 Newport XPS controllers of various generations at the beamlines at APS sector 13.  Since you are at APS sector 15 we are close by to help!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response. The reason I chose SPI-MAXnet 8000 8-axis over MAXnet 10-axis version is: as per the OMS website SPI-MAXnet 8000 can directly go into Step-Pak Plus rack along with the 8 driver modules. Hence the whole system will be contained within a Step-Pak rack without building connectors for the MAXnet. I am also considering the ACS Controls MP4U unit. Can you suggest any other Ethernet-ready motor controllers?  I started looking at these options other than the VME crate for having compact standalone systems with multiple axis support, and most importantly, with the least lead time.

Best,

Mrinal

Hi Mrinal,

There is now a 10-axis version of the MAXnet, so you could use just 2 of them.  The MAXnet driver inherits from asynMotorController, so it should definitely support multiple controllers in the same IOC.  Each is a separate asynPortDriver object with a different asyn port name.

If you are planning to use this on a beamline that already has many VME cards like the OMS MAXv then I wonder if it is the best solution.  You will need to build a box with power supply and connectors for the MAXnet, while adding from more MAXv cards is simpler.  If you want an Ethernet solution there are more powerful controllers available that already have nice packaging.

Hi,
While looking for 18 axis application, I came across the OMS SPI-MAXnet 8000 8-axis controller. For the 18 axis application, I would need 3 of such controllers. As the EPICS motor record support OMS-MAXnet controllers, would it be possible to configure all the three controllers under a single soft-IOC, or do I need to run 3 separate soft-IOCs?

Best,
Mrinal
