That is true especially for Red Hat. I have not seen this problem.
Chip what flavor of Linux are you using?
I have tested the build on RH Enterprise Linux as well as Fedora Core
Release 3 with success
gcc version 3.4.2 20041017 (Red Hat 3.4.2-6.fc3)
