Florian,
As I received this email, I was just wondering about that. I had set it previously in the build for PyDevice itself but checking the docs a few times, didn’t think to set it also in the ioc CONFIG_SITE file. It now builds without error and the ioc runs.
So, the long and short is that PYTHIN_CONFIG needs to be set globally or in CONFIG_SITE for both support and any IOC builds as well. maybe it should have been obvious but oh well.

I made a small test on my setup (Debian 11, EPICS_BASE 7.0.5, python3.9)
and I get this error when PYTHON_CONFIG is undefined.
Where have you defined the PYTHON_CONFIG variable? It should be defined
in configure/CONFIG_SITE of your IOC.
